DIY Safety Disclaimer

The guides on BMG Renovation are general information for homeowners. Every house, product and local code is different, so read the manufacturer instructions for your equipment and check your local building code before you start.

Know your limits

  • Electrical: turn off the circuit at the breaker and confirm it is dead with a tester before touching any wiring. Panel work, new circuits and service upgrades usually require a permit and, in many areas, a licensed electrician.
  • Gas: if you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Gas line work belongs to a licensed professional.
  • Structure: do not remove or cut walls, beams or joists without confirming they are not load-bearing.
  • Hazardous materials: homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and older materials may contain asbestos. Test before sanding, cutting or demolishing.
  • Heights: use fall protection on roofs and set ladders on firm, level ground.

You are responsible for your own safety and for any work you carry out. When in doubt, hire a licensed and insured professional.
