Our goal is simple: a reader should be able to finish a job, or decide not to start it, after reading one of our guides.
How guides are written
- Each guide targets one specific task or question and answers it near the top of the page.
- Instructions are checked against manufacturer manuals, product documentation and code references such as the International Residential Code and the National Electrical Code where they apply.
- Costs and prices are researched at the time of writing and dated when they are likely to change.
- Safety steps come first, not in a footnote. Jobs that legally require a permit or a licensed trade are marked as such.
Corrections and updates
When we find an error, or a reader reports one, we correct the guide and update its date. We review guides on a schedule and whenever products or codes change.
Independence
We do not accept payment to recommend a product, contractor or service. If we ever add affiliate links, they will be disclosed on the page where they appear.
